Patrick McCluskey is a contented man, planning to spend the winter walking the white sandy beaches of Florida’s Gulf Coast with his new partner, Judith, a beautiful and exceptionally talented illustrator of birds. A former Cleveland detective, McCluskey has put his son’s tragic death, a messy divorce, a battle with booze and a career-ending bullet from a Saturday night special behind him. He is totally in love with Judith, and happily learning to know and love her birds. Then Lieutenant Bobby Baer of the Cypress Bay Police Department calls to tell him that Martha Axworthy, the fifty-something president of the local branch of the North American Ornithological Society, has been found dead, face-down in the mud of the Corkscrew Nature Reserve, and McCluskey is back in the sleuthing business. Another in a series from Bantry Books, A Bird of a Different Color is a murder mystery written especially for birders. But with more than enough of Digby Maclaughlin’s usual laugh-a-page flair and wit -- plus suspense -- there’s plenty in this tale of death with duplicity cubed to engage non-birders who are simply in search of a good old-fashioned, page-turning who-dunnit.

I only gave this book three stars because the author basically cut and pasted in several sections relating to the death of Robert's son from the two earlier books in the series. The story is otherwise really fun. I rate this series as one of my guilty pleasures and absolutely adore it. I love all of the birding references and wanted more of the Judith sub-plot with the osprey. Judith is such a fun character that she deserves more of the page. The stuff about Robert's son made sense as back story in the first book but had absolutely nothing to do with the plot of this book, or even of the second book, and relating it again verbatim makes the event lose dramatic impact. Robert doesn't act like he is dwelling on his son's death, he is all about Judith and the current mystery. If we actually saw him on the phone or getting together with the ex-wife or surviving children and it would make more sence to reopen that wound. For example, they don't completely retell the death of Beckett's mother on every episode of Castle. They mention it when it relates to the plot in some way. I think the author is very tallented. Every book is better than the last. I am eagerly awaiting the next volume. Three books in series thus far: A Bird to Die For,A Bird of a Different Color,Waiting for Godwits.Product details

A Bird of a Different Color edition by Digby Maclaughlin Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I thoroughly enjoyed Bird of A Different Colour. It was well plotted, had interesting characters and the dialog had both wit and charm. I'm not a birder (at least not yet) so cannot vouch for the technical details, although I thought the confusion of warblers was an intentional clue/plot device and not an error. There is sufficient credible clues and twists to keep one guessing right up to the discovery of the murderer and the pace kept me engaged throughout. All in all a great summer read so I'm planning on enjoying more in the series.
I'll definitely be downloading more of Digby's books that combine mystery and thriller elements with a slice of Florida life -- both the exotic bird life and the equally compelling people who have gravitated to the state. Reading "Bird of a Different Color" is definitely going to make my next winter trek to Florida from Canada more interesting. It should be a hoot to visit some of the locales described so carefully in the book -- such as Corkscrew Swamp.
A pretty standard murder mystery with some fun references to birds and birding, but desperately in need of a proofreader/copy editor -- lots of dropped articles, incorrect punctuation, flip-flopping between American and British spelling, etc. One of the things I don't like about e-books is that they often don't undergo the usual editorial process, resulting in errors that might have had a better chance of getting caught in paper-and-ink publication. On the other hand, I didn't find any ornithological errors regarding North American birds. I've never birded the British Isles, so can't say if those references were accurate or not. All-in-all, a quick, light, [mostly] enjoyable read for a cool night in fall.
Enjoyable plot and interesting characters. As a birder, I found the birding bits mostly believable, though there are a few details that are slightly off, such as the spelling of Humming Bird and the confounding of Old World Warblers and North American ones. Unfortunately, there are a lot of proof-reading and formatting errors, at least in the kindle version, that detracted from my reading experience. But I will get another of the author's birder mysteries!
